Amman, Nov. 4 (Petra) - The Arab Potash Company (APC) and the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) launched on Wednesday the Tamarisk Forest Sustainability Project in the southern Dead Sea region.
The initiative, funded by APC and implemented by the RSCN, intends to restore native tamarisk trees and safeguard critical natural habitats within the Fifa Nature Reserve.
The Fifa Nature Reserve is the world's lowest-elevation wetland site registered under the Ramsar Convention. It also serves as a stopover for migratory birds traveling between Africa and Europe.
According to an APC statement, around 40 bird species have been recorded in the reserve, most of which nest there. The new project specifically targets habitat protection for vulnerable local wildlife, including the Dead Sea Sparrow and the Nubian Nightjar.
The inauguration event took place at the reserve's headquarters, featuring a ceremonial tree planting, and a presentation outlining the project's core components.
The statement said ecological field surveys consist of assessing tamarisk tree distribution, health, and natural regeneration potential.
Grazing impact studies seek to assess livestock pressure on vegetation to establish sustainable grazing guidelines.
Meanwhile, enhanced environmental protection eyes boosting field patrols in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Royal Administration for Environmental Protection.
Under community engagement, environmental awareness programs will be held for local students and community members.
APC Chair Shehadah Abu Hdaib and CEO Maen Nsour said the partnership showcases the company's commitment to balancing industrial operations with long-term ecological stewardship, fighting desertification, and protecting fragile ecosystems in the Southern Ghor.
RSCN Board Chair Batool Ajlouni and Director General Fadi Naser noted that corporate partnerships are "essential" for habitat restoration, biodiversity preservation, and ensuring natural resources are sustained for future generations.
